Investigation launched into councillor absenteeism at eThekwini Council meeting

eThekwini Municipality's Speaker, Councillor Thabani Nyawose, said he will investigate why there were approximately 80 councillors absent at Thursday’s council meeting.

The eThekwini Municipal Council comprises 222 councillors. This total is equally divided into 111 elected ward councillors and 111 Proportional Representation (PR) councillors, who represent various political parties.

At Thursday’s meeting, only 138 councillors were present. The EFF, the third biggest party in eThekwini, only had three members in attendance.

Nyawose said he was concerned about the applications for leave of absence presented to him at the meeting.
