BEIRUT — The Israeli army said Thursday it will continue its ongoing offensive in southern Lebanon despite a trilateral declaration issued in Washington announcing an agreement on a ceasefire, while Defense Minister Israel Katz said military operations will continue until Hezbollah is removed from areas south of the Litani River.Several people have been wounded in an Israeli drone attack on a vehicle after Israel and Lebanon officials agreed to halt the war after a series of meetings in Washington.“Fighting in southern Lebanon is ongoing, and the Israeli army continues to target Hezbollah facilities and infrastructure located in and near your villages,” Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on the US social media company X.Adraee urged residents to avoid traveling south of the Zahrani River “until further notice,” warning that “anyone moving south is putting their life at risk.”Separately, Katz said the ceasefire agreement reached with Beirut “remains conditional” on the removal of Hezbollah fighters from southern Lebanon. There have been ongoing overflights by jets and drones for much of the morning – a drone flying over the city of Tyre was at extremely low altitude while Israel conducted several artillery strikes on this same front, further into the Lebanese interior, Al Jazeera reported. There were drone and artillery strikes, especially around the Naqoura region, where Israel has made a significant ground advance over the past week or so, taking the high ground near Beaufort Castle. In the town of Kfar Tibnit for example, several people were injured in a drone strike at the main roundabout.Three people have been killed and four injured in an Israeli strike on the town of Sohmor in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, the state-run NNA news agency reports.A separate strike also hit Tell al-Aqareb, north of Sohmor, despite a ceasefire having been agreed between Israel and Lebanon.Additional raids also hit the southern Lebanese towns of Haddatha, Tibnin, Haris, and Harin.Civil Defence authorities in Lebanon have asked people not to return south despite the ceasefire announcement, citing ongoing dangers and the risk of unexploded ordnance in towns and villages. Before the truce announcement, Hezbollah said it launched a “salvo of rockets” at Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon’s Qantara, and fired drones at troops near the strategic Beaufort Castle.Lebanon’s president has met French presidential envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian at the presidential palace in Baabda, his office said on Thursday.“The President of the Republic emphasized the necessity of not giving Israel pretexts for not withdrawing [from Lebanon] and that every effort in this regard will have positive repercussions on the negotiations,” the statement said.Aoun welcomed the assistance of “friendly and brotherly countries”, including France, in consolidating the ceasefire. At the conclusion of a fourth round of negotiations in Washington, Lebanon, Israel and the US announced in a joint statement that Beirut and Tel Aviv had agreed to implement a ceasefire.According to the joint statement, the measures are intended to pave the way for a comprehensive peace and security agreement.Delegations discussed a security framework focused on guaranteeing the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of both Lebanon and Israel, including the dismantling of non-state armed groups and preventing their re-emergence.The two sides also agreed to resume political and security tracks during the week beginning June 22 in an effort to reach a comprehensive agreement. According to the joint statement, the US will continue facilitating communication between the parties during the transitional period.Meanwhile, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says the attack on a UNIFIL base in southern Lebanon that killed a Serbian peacekeeper also wounded two Spanish nationals with the UN mission. The mortar attack hit the Spanish base Miguel de Cervantes in southern Lebanon on Wednesday evening, Sanchez said on X.“Our most absolute condemnation of the violence and all our support to those who risk their lives to defend peace under the flag of the United Nations,” the prime minister said.
