Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras on Thursday called for a comprehensive national strategy to help Greece adapt to the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
Speaking at a conference in Athens, Stournaras said the impact of AI would depend on how governments, businesses and societies choose to manage the technology.
“Artificial Intelligence can become the greatest accelerator of progress humanity has ever known,” the Athens-Macedonian News Agency quoted him as saying.
“Or it can become the greatest multiplier of inequality and concentration of economic and technological power if the transition is not accompanied by strong institutions and appropriate policies. The outcome is not predetermined. It will depend on the decisions we now make – as governments, as central banks, as businesses and, above all, as societies,” he added.
Stournaras said Greece’s highly skilled workforce, strong academic community and large pool of Greek professionals working abroad could give the country a competitive advantage in the AI era.
