What do you do when you realize that your chosen career just isn’t working for you anymore? For Martrisha Bradshaw, the answer was to pick up a hammer. Unsatisfied with her career in marketing, she decided at 40 years old to apply for Hope Renovations, a program that trains women and nonbinary people in the trades. Today, Bradshaw is an instructor in the program, teaching new cohorts of trainees how to make their own pivot to the trades. Later in the episode, Reema speaks with Phoebe Gavin, a career coach who supports her clients through all kinds of pivots. A few takeaways from this episode: Get clear on why you want to make a pivot. Gavin recommends making a list of emotions that you feel at work and letting those guide your search. When Gavin works with clients, “we're looking at what are the things that you’ve really loved at work, those are patterns that we can look for in other careers.”Give yourself permission to dream. Gavin has her clients list out every career they’re interested in before getting into hangups. “Often there's at least one idea that they are discounting or thinking is impossible that isn't actually impossible,” Gavin said.Do your research before leaping into graduate school. Gavin told us that she gets lots of grad school regret in her office. She recommends making sure that a higher degree is actually essential to the field you’re entering before taking on debt.
