Police constable Lucky Sandile Maduna has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Nonkululeko Mtsweni, during a violent altercation at a birthday party. The court also imposed a 10-year sentence for the attempted murder of a friend who tried to intervene.
A former Public Order Policing unit officer, who admitted guilt for the murder of his wife, will serve life behind bars after being sentenced this week.
The Hazyview police constable, Lucky Sandile Maduna, 34, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, murdered his wife, Nonkululeko Mtsweni, on October 3, 2023, during an altercation they had while attending a birthday party at her place of employment.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) welcomed the sentence handed down by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Mbombela.
Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping said Maduna was further sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for the attempted murder of his wife’s friend, Veronica Sithole.
