The studio cabins on NCL's 'Norwegian Epic' cruise ship are only available to solo travelers.David NikelOn a recent seven-night Mediterranean cruise on Norwegian Epic, I booked one of NCL’s solo studio cabins to see whether the line’s reputation for solo cruising held up on a large, busy ship carrying more than 4,000 passengers. The answer was yes, although not simply because of the cabin.NCL’s solo product works because it combines practical accommodations, a dedicated social space and hosted solo events that make meeting people easy without making it compulsory.A Cabin Designed For OneNorwegian Epic was one of the ships that helped popularize the modern solo cruise cabin concept.Rather than simply selling a standard inside cabin to one person at a higher price, NCL created a dedicated studio cabin area designed specifically for solo passengers. Couples cannot book these. The studio cabins are compact but comfortable. Mine had the size and feel of a Yotel-style airport hotel room, with clever storage solutions, a larger-than-expected bed, soft mood lighting and enough space for one person to sleep, shower and dress during a weeklong cruise. There are compromises. The studio cabins are inside cabins, so there is no natural light. There’s no refrigerator, which some travelers may miss. The bathroom setup is unusual, with the shower and sink incorporated into the cabin space rather than placed in a separate bathroom area. For one person, however, such a layout works just fine. One design feature worth watching for is the number of studio cabins with connecting doors. These are useful for friends or family members traveling together who want separate rooms close by.The connecting doors are locked, of course, but they do allow more sound to travel between cabins. That’s a genuine issue at times. Solo cabins are generally quieter than rooms occupied by couples or families, but light sleepers should be aware of the possibility. There's plenty of space to work or relax in the studio lounge on the 'Norwegian Epic' cruise ship.David NikelThe cabin is not somewhere to spend hours relaxing, but that is not really the point of this kind of room. It is a private, efficient base on a large ship with plenty happening elsewhere.NCL’s Studio Lounge Makes The DifferenceThe real strength of NCL’s solo experience is not the cabin itself. It is the dedicated studio lounge. On Norwegian Epic, the studio cabin corridor is access controlled, creating a quieter zone within the ship. The lounge sits within and gives solo travelers a shared space to use throughout the cruise. It offered hot drinks, simple breakfast items, snacks, a bar open for pre-dinner drinks every evening and a whiteboard used for meetups and group plans.Pastries and fruit were available free of charge for breakfast in the studio lounge throughout the cruise. Other snacks were available later in the day.David NikelAt first, the lounge was quiet. By the middle of the cruise, it had changed. People had begun to recognize each other. A quick “hey” in the morning made the space feel less like a waiting room and more like a small village within a much larger city. That matters on a ship the size of Norwegian Epic. Large ships can be exciting, but they can also be anonymous. The studio lounge softened that feeling without forcing anyone to socialize. Some passengers want to meet others every day. Some want occasional conversation. Some simply want the option. NCL’s setup allows for all three.Hosted Meetups Remove The AwkwardnessSolo traveler meetups can be hit or miss on cruise ships. On some lines, there may be one introductory gathering and little meaningful follow-up. NCL takes a more active approach. On Norwegian Epic, daily solo traveler gatherings were held not only for people staying in studio cabins, but for all solo passengers across the ship. Many solo travelers book regular inside, oceanview, balcony or even suite accommodations, so limiting the social program to studio guests would miss a large part of the audience. There were usually people in the studio lounge throughout the cruise.David NikelAfter a brief game or activity, the host helped coordinate an optional group dinner afterward in one of the main dining rooms. Dining alone is not a problem for everyone, but it can be one of the most intimidating parts of solo cruising.Dining Alone Was Easier Than ExpectedOn embarkation day, I ate alone at the Italian specialty restaurant. There were other solo diners nearby, and the service was warm and professional.Later in the cruise, I joined other solo travelers for dinner in the main dining room. I also tried Teppanyaki, where the communal table format could feel awkward for some solo guests, but in my case turned into one of the most entertaining meals of the week once the ice had been broken. The practical side also improved once onboard. Before the cruise, booking specialty restaurants as a party of one had been confusing online, with restaurants only appearing to offer tables for two or more.Once on the ship, booking specialty dining for one either in person or on the app was easy. That said, clearer information before boarding would help solo passengers plan with more confidence. Is NCL The Best Cruise Line For Solo Travelers?NCL’s solo experience is not perfect. The studio cabin will not suit travelers who need complete silence or more space. The lounge is genuinely useful, but far from luxurious. It’s certainly not an equivalent of The Haven, NCL’s ship-within-a-ship area for suite guests, even though it serves a similar purpose in some ways.Still, the core solo experience was impressive. NCL does not simply provide a smaller cabin and leave solo guests to fend for themselves. It has created a practical ecosystem to allow each solo passenger to be as social or as independent as they want.Whether Norwegian Cruise Line is the best cruise line for solo travelers depends on what kind of solo traveler you are. Those seeking a quiet, traditional cruise may find NCL’s big-ship energy, gameshows, casino and lively entertainment style too much. But for solo travelers who want choice, flexibility and the option to meet people without being forced into group activities, NCL makes a compelling case.MORE FROM FORBESForbesA Younger Generation Of Travelers Is Reshaping The Cruise IndustryBy David NikelForbesWhy Not All Norwegian Fjords Cruises Are The SameBy David NikelForbesWhy Cruise Lines Are Betting On The Mediterranean In WinterBy David Nikel
