Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to approve a $100 million settlement with all but one of the current plaintiffs suing the university over allegations of sexual abuse by former OSU sports medicine and team doctor Richard Strauss.
In a statement released by Ohio State on behalf of both the school and plaintiffs, the parties said they had reached a prospective resolution with 279 of 280 plaintiffs involved in the current litigation.
“The university’s Board of Trustees has now publicly ratified these agreements in principle, and all parties thank the mediators for their assistance,” the statement read.
The identity of the lone holdout has not been disclosed, but in a phone call with Sportico late Wednesday, a source close to the plaintiffs cautioned that finalizing the settlement is a “fluid process.”
As for now, the bellwether trial involving the four companion cases against Ohio State remains scheduled for October. The trustees, as part of their vote Wednesday, authorized the school’s general counsel to “take all actions necessary and appropriate to implement the resolution,” including through “continued litigation.”
