Back in 1985, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev allegedly told French President Francois Mitterrand in a private conversation that the USSR was a “third-world country with nuclear weapons.” Not much has changed in Russia proper, including the presence of Western dupes cheering on the flailing autocrats. While in Russia to speak at the St Petersburg Economic Forum, known as the “Russian Davos” to the deluded, popular podcaster Candace Owens took time out to visit Moscow and praise the country. “The Christian expression and heritage here is unmatched,” she told millions of her followers on X. “Unsurprisingly, they are lying to us about Russia.”
You’ll remember that a few years ago, groyper cult leader Tucker Carlson also visited Russia, marveled at the bread, and told his followers it was much nicer than the United States.
Most of the pictures of religious mosaics shared by Owens on her social media feed seem to be taken at the Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces, which celebrates the nation’s past glories. And Russian culture has produced some of the greatest art mankind has ever known.
But very much like the podcasters themselves, contemporary Russia uses “Christian expression” as a cynical pose. Only around 6% of Russians attend any religious service on a weekly basis. In comparison, around 30% to 40% of Americans do.
