The southwest monsoon, which is likely to arrive in Kerala on Thursday (June 4), may reach Andhra Pradesh in the next three to four days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati.Last year, the southwest monsoon arrived in the State on May 26. This year too, the monsoon was expected in the State around June 1, but the criteria to declare the onset of monsoon was not fulfilled, say weather experts.Usually, it takes three to four days for the monsoon to reach A.P. after its onset in Kerala. But in case of further delays, it may take up to seven days as well, said S. Karunasagar, scientist, IMD-Amaravati.While conditions are favourable for the monsoon to hit the State in the next four days, clarity will emerge after the onset in Kerala., he said.Meanwhile, the State continues to reel under hot and humid weather conditions. According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), no mandal experienced severe heatwaves on Wednesday, while heatwave conditions were recorded in 20 mandals. The day’s highest temperature of 44.5°C was recorded in Nandanamarella of Markapuram district.The APSDMA has forecast severe heatwaves for 46 mandals and heatwaves for 79 mandals on Thursday. The districts of Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Srikakulam, Alluri Sitharama Raju and Polavaram are likely to be affected, in that order. On Friday, severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in more mandals.In its monthly outlook for June, the IMD stated that the State may see above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures, and there is also a possibility of three to four heatwave days this month. The rainfall distribution is going to be uneven, as Rayalaseema is likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, the coastal areas and northern part of the State may receive below-normal rainfall.On Wednesday, Rajam in Vizianagaram district received the day’s maximum rainfall of 32 mm, while some places in Alluri Sitharama Raju, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Anantapur, Krishna, Chittoor, NTR, received light to moderate showers, according to the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.
