A single exchange-traded fund now holds more assets than the GDP of most countries. Vanguard’s S&P 500 ETF, ticker VOO, has crossed $1 trillion in assets under management, making it the first ETF in history to reach that threshold.
The road to a trillion
VOO overtook the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, known as SPY, as the world’s largest ETF back in February 2025. The Vanguard fund now leads SPY by roughly $200 billion in total assets.
In 2025 alone, VOO pulled in more than $100 billion in net inflows. By April 2026, it became the first ETF to crack $900 billion. As of June 1, 2026, its AUM stood at approximately $980.7 billion, climbing to as high as $998.18 billion shortly after that. Daily inflows averaged around $1.25 billion.
