Garlapati Nanda Kishore has been elected as the chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC), while K. Venkata Subba Rao Naidu has been chosen as the vice-chairman, Director of Secondary Health and Returning Officer for the elections, K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, announced on Wednesday.The elections for the two top positions were held at the APMC office in Vijayawada on Wednnesday. The existing medical council is a 25-member body, with 13 members elected by registered medical practitioners from across the State, eight nominated posts and four ex-officio members. All of them took part in the voting on Wednesday.Sixteen members voted in favour of Dr. Nanda Kishore, an ENT specialist from Guntur and a central working committee member of the IMA, A.P.Having completed his MBBS from Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada and Master of Surgery in ENT from Andhra Medical College, Dr. Nanda Kishore has served as a consultant ENT surgeon, HoD, and Associate Professor at Katuri Medical College. Dr. Nanda Kishore has nine years of teaching experience.The tenure of the chairman is two years, while elections for the council are held once every five years.Dr. Sreehari Rao, A.V. Subba Reddy, and Swarna Geetha were elected as the executive members.Meanwhile, the Health Care Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA) has opposed the election process, saying that the elections were conducted by utilising the nominated-member system, which is contrary to the spirit of democracy.In a statement on Wednesday, the HRDA alleged that the election process lacked fairness and impartiality and that the opinions of elected members were disregarded.
