The group said Nigeria was witnessing a “deepening democratic decline” characterised by several challenges, including declining public confidence in elections.
Political leaders, civil society groups and pro-democracy advocates under the umbrella of the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) have resolved to engage the National Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the judiciary and security agencies on what they described as urgent reforms needed to guarantee credible elections in 2027.
The resolution was reached at an Emergency National Stakeholders’ Engagement on Nigeria’s 2027 Elections held at NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja on May 25, 2026.
The meeting, convened by the Movement for Credible Elections and chaired by former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, was held under the theme, “Actualizing Credible 2027 Elections in Nigeria.”
Participants also announced plans for a nationwide mobilisation on June 12, 2026, aimed at rallying Nigerians to defend electoral integrity and democratic values ahead of the next general election.
