Sthembiso Mdlalose made a brief court appearance at the Johannesburg High Court.
The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has postponed the judgment of Sithembiso Lawrence Mdlalose, the alleged arsonist responsible for the devastating Usindiso Building fire that claimed countless lives.
Magaboke Mohlatlole, the regional spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), said the matter was postponed to July 21, 2026, allow the State to comply with court directives and to address issues relating to certain postmortem findings that were previously raised by the court.
The court heard that prior to the inferno on August 31, 2023, Mdlalose, 31, a resident of the building, reportedly engaged in a violent altercation with another resident. This confrontation supposedly incited Mdlalose to carry out the desperate act that would lead to an unimaginable loss of life.
"He was allegedly involved in a violent altercation with a person known as "KB" in a ground-floor room on the day of the incident. It is alleged that Mdlalose assaulted KB over money related to drugs that KB had sold on his behalf. The assault allegedly continued until KB lost consciousness, prompting the accused to mistakenly believe that he had died," said Mohlatlole.
