A Bulgarian-born police officer serving in the United States was shot during a law enforcement operation in Atlantic City, New Jersey, US authorities confirmed.

The incident took place on June 2 at around 3:00 p.m. local time on North Florida Avenue, when officers were carrying out a search warrant. During the operation, a suspect opened fire, triggering a shootout with police.

Hristiyan Ivanov, a sergeant in a specialized police unit, was among those hit. A second officer was also wounded, though officials said his injuries are not life-threatening. Ivanov was reported to be in critical condition after being taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. said the situation could have been far worse, noting that a bullet passed dangerously close to one officer’s head but was stopped by protective gear. “The officer avoided more serious consequences thanks to his helmet,” he stated.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect died during the exchange of fire. CBS News reported that multiple officers were involved in the response, though full details of the case have not yet been released.
