A suspect in a fleeing vehicle struck an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during an attempted apprehension near the Jersey Shore on Monday, June 15, local police said.The incident reportedly took place about 9:30 a.m. ET on State Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in Manahawkin, an unincorporated community in Ocean County, New Jersey.According to preliminary information from the Stafford Township Police Department, ICE was attempting to "apprehend a suspect" when the suspect fled from the scene in a vehicle, striking the officer.The officer fired shots at the vehicle, reportedly striking it, police wrote in a statement on social media.The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle, and as of early afternoon, remained at large, police said.The USA TODAY Network has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and to ICE in Newark.The extent of the officer's injuries were not immediately known, according to police. It was not known whether the suspect was injured or whether anyone else was in the fleeing vehicle."There is no reason to believe there is any concern for the public’s safety," the department wrote.The FBI's Red Bank office was investigating the incident, the Asbury Park Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported.
