The 64th Independence Day celebrations came to a close on Wednesday with prizes distributed for the sporting events, a float competition and the variety show, which went into the night.
The closing ceremony for Samoa’s 64th Independence celebration was held at Mulinu’u on Wednesday from morning until noon.
The Head of State, Tuimalealiʻifano Vaʻaletoʻa Sualauvi II, and Mafioso, Prime Minister, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, cabinet ministers, businesspeople and diplomats were present at the closing ceremony.
The event started with a showcase of newly woven fine mats by different weaving communities in Samoa, followed by a parade of eight car floats. There were four car floats from Upolu and four from Savai’i.
Nearing the end of the ceremony, a prize-giving was held for Va’a Niue race, also known as the Tu’uga Paopao, Tu’uga Fautasi, Kilikiti and one-day events for separate sports, including Touch, Tag, and Netball.The fautasi prizes totaled $375,000 across both the Monday and Wednesday competitions.
