OTTAWA — Partisan barbs and shouting erupted in the House of Commons Tuesday, as the opposition Conservatives tore into Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Toronto antisemitism speech — an address that got a mixed reaction from some prominent Jewish groups who argued the federal government’s response to the problem still falls short. The Conservatives aggressively criticized the prime minister, with deputy party leader Melissa Lantsman declaring Carney’s speech was “so neutered that an antisemite would have given it a standing ovation.” She railed against the new advisory council on human rights and inclusion that Carney announced during the speech, in part for including a lawyer who represented organizers of protest encampments erected to protest the Israeli government actions during the war in Gaza that was sparked by the Hamas massacre of Oct. 7, 2023.“Jewish Canadians are being attacked on the streets, and they’re giving the keys to the very people who fuelled the crisis,” Lantsman said.
