Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Tuesday (2) accused senator and presidential pre-candidate Flávio Bolsonaro of being a "traitor to the homeland" and an "idiot". During an event in Catalão, in the state of Goiás, Lula linked former president Jair Bolsonaro’s son to the United States government proposal to impose 25% tariffs on goods imported from Brazil."Those Bolsonaro sons manage to be worse than him. They are, in fact, sellouts of the homeland. They went to ask a foreign country to interfere in Brazilian decisions. They are traitors," said the president.

Lula said the senator would have requested foreign interference in Brazilian elections after meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The president also recalled that Flávio celebrated the previous imposition of tariffs in July 2025.

Flávio Bolsonaro denied the accusations and said he had "expressly" asked Trump not to impose tariffs on Brazil.

The proposal for a new tax comes after the Trump administration concluded the Section 301 investigation against Brazil.
