At least two people have been killed in the central Kenyan town of Nanyuki following protests against a proposed United States-backed Ebola treatment facility planned for a military base in the area.
The deaths, according to BBC, occurred amid growing public opposition to plans to establish a 50-bed Ebola isolation centre at the Laikipia Airbase, a military installation near Nanyuki.
According to reports, one of the victims was shot near the airbase during a demonstration and later died after being rushed to a local hospital by friends. A second victim was reportedly brought to the same hospital already dead by soldiers.
Authorities have yet to officially confirm the circumstances surrounding the deaths. A police spokesperson told Reuters he was unaware of any fatalities linked to the protests.
