Built in 1910, the little yellow cottage at 172 Miro St in Manunui, a tiny hamlet outside Taumarunui, in Ruapehu, is a real vintage charmer. Not all the buildings on the property are more than a century old, however.

Sitting at the rear of the 1275m² section, just behind the She Shed and a discreet carport, is an as-new one bed tiny home, complete with a private deck.

The property is shared by the owner, who has lived there for about 30 years, with one of her children, who lives in the tiny home to be close to their elderly mum. It has meant the owner could stay in her beloved home as long as possible, with the safety and security of knowing family is nearby if needed.

Tall Poppy Ruapehu & King Country agent Tim Burton says it’s a lifestyle choice he’s been seeing more and more of lately.

“We are seeing families wanting a bit of extra space for a parent on their own. Having family close becomes important. Also, with cost of living, parents or family assisting the younger generation into purchasing is an option.”
