They’ll tell you a “dream home” is a mansion in Remuera, or a sprawling architectural build on Waiheke, but while those kinds of homes are pretty dreamy, most of us are chasing the kind of dream we might actually be able to pull off.

When I was growing up, the Kiwi property dream was much more realistic and attainable. A weatherboard house, on a quarter-acre section, in walking distance of a primary school and a bus stop.

These days, there are as many dream homes as there are people. For some, the dream is a little cottage, for others, it’s a converted industrial or commercial building, a leafy lifestyle block, or a rustic log cabin.

Well, what if I told you there was a district in the North Island where you could find all of those dream homes? And they’re all around $500k?

Now, to be clear, we’re not talking glossy magazine mansions here, but homes with character, and the kind of price tag that still feels within reach.
