With blazes starting early this year, the EU is deploying nearly 800 firefighters
With forest fires starting earlier and growing in scale, the EU executive is putting its largest-ever firefighting force on standby this year, Hadja Lahbib, the bloc’s crisis management chief, announced on Tuesday.
It has become something of a tradition: as spring turns to summer, the European Commission announces an expansion of the EU’s firefighting fleet.
This year, several major conflagrations broke out even before the Commission’s announcement, prompting Lahbib to remark that there was “no longer a fire season”.
