Government arts and science colleges in the cities and district headquarters, where the proportion of permanent teachers is usually higher than the guest faculty, are staring at the eventuality of functioning with unfilled vacancies.Over the next few years, 10 to 15 retirement vacancies will be arising in the colleges in urban locations, and in the absence of timely transfer counselling or replacement with guest faculty, the institutions will face a piquant situation, it is learnt.In the rural parts, the proportion of guest faculty is usually higher.There is no indication of the new government taking initiatives for filling the vacancies through direct recruitment for the post of Assistant Professor.For the coming weeks, the focus is going to be on admissions. The faculty recruitment will be on the backburner, according to college heads.There is, nevertheless, expectation in academic circles that the process of promotion of senior professors to the post of principal will be carried out in right earnest before the start of the 2026-27 academic session.The legal wrangle has been addressed and the list of promotes has been readied, sources added.
