The Transport department has refused to renew fitness certificate issued to 37 vehicles owned by educational institutions during the annual camp held a few days ago in Puducherry.At the two-day inspection camp for vehicles of educational institutions held at Mettupalayam on May 30 and 31, 227 vehicles were brought for fitness test. Fitness certificates were issued to 190 vehicles, and 37 buses were denied fitness certification as they failed to fulfill the criteria. The fitness certificate of the vehicles will be renewed only after they qualify the test, said an official.Inspection was done to check 14 parameters, including whether the vehicle has got the mandatory colour coding, details of the institutions imprinted, installed GPS, speed governors, fire extinguishers, provided horizontal railings for windows and exits for renewal of fitness certification, the official said.The Transport department carries out annual exercise to check the roadworthiness of vehicles owned by educational institutions before the reopening of schools and colleges after summer break.
