The Horticulture Department has undertaken a survey to assess the extent of damage to banana crops because of recent gusty winds in Papanasam and Thiruvaiyaru areas in Thanjavur district, A.M. Shajahan, Minister for Minorities Welfare, said here on Tuesday.Speaking to reporters after inspecting damaged banana plantations along with Collector R. Revathi and other officials in Papanasam and Thiruvaiyaru Assembly segments, Mr. Shajahan said banana had been raised on about 728 hectares hectares in Thanjavur district, including about 432 hectares in Papanasam and 295 hectares in Thiruvaiyaru.Officials have taken up an assessment of the damage and so far banana plantations on about 82 hectares were found to be damaged. The survey would be carried out over four days and once completed, the matter would be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister for sanction of due compensation, he said.Mr. Shajahan said that farmers of the region had sought paddy drying yard and marketing centres for flowers and other rain-fed crops and steps would be taken to fulfil their demands.
