Putin launched one of the largest drone strikes of the year in Ukraine last night, killing 15 civilians and costing the Kremlin around £400,000,00012:58, 02 Jun 2026Russia's wartime economy is reportedly on the verge of collapse, Putin has been warned, after the despot blew over £400m in a single night on a massive drone attack on Ukraine.Last night saw the Kremlin stage one of its largest missile and drone strikes on Ukraine this year, killing at least 15 and leaving more than 100 wounded.Putin expended 73 missiles and 656 drones in an attack that cost an estimated £400 million on Manday night, killing at least 11 people in Dnipro and four in Kyiv.Ukraine’s air force said it had stopped 40 missiles and 602 drones - around 88% of the payload - but around 38 targets were hit nonetheless. This came after reports that the Kremlin’s top financial officials told Putin that his war spending is now unaffordable as the Russian economy hits the buffers. Both the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Russia warned Putin this week of “critical risks” for stability as his deficit in Ukraine spirals out of control. This year alone has seen Russia's Ministry of Defence rack up a huge deficit of around three trillion rubles (£30 billion).Yet despite this, Moscow's MoD has so far resisted cuts and demanded additional funding to reign terror upon Ukraine, with Putin drastically slashing other departments' budgets to make up for the shortfall.Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones set ablaze Ilsky Oil Refinery in Krasnodar region, the 16th time it has been attacked during the war.Russia has been teetering on the edge of a recession after cutting forecasted growth in May, with Putin reportedly demanding officials to explain his country's economic shambles. And despite being handed an economic lifeline earlier this year after the war in Iran caused the price of oil to spike, the increased gains won't be nearly enough to plug the massive hole in Russia's budget.Earlier this week, Britain helped the French navy seize one of Russia’s shadow fleet tankers in a further blow to Russia's clandestine oil operation, after it was captured on Monday around 400 nautical miles west of the tip of Brittany.Article continues belowThe sanctioned ship, the Tagor, was boarded on Sunday with the help of the UK, the French President said in a statement.Russia claimed the seizure was "illegal" and "bordering on international piracy,” but the French president hit back and slammed the dictator's shadow fleet as a key component in funding Putin's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. This is a Breaking News story.
