A US-backed plan to quarantine Americans potentially exposed to Ebola in Kenya has sparked protests, a court challenge and growing public anger, turning what was intended as a public health preparedness measure into one of the country's most contentious political issues.
Last week, Kenya approved a US request to establish the facility at Laikipia Air Base in central Kenya.
The site would be used to quarantine American citizens who may have been exposed to Ebola during the ongoing outbreak affecting parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The decision immediately drew criticism from local residents and political activists, who argued that the arrangement could expose nearby communities to unnecessary risks and was approved without sufficient public consultation.
