Rob Rinder is looking back at a murder case more than 20 years after it happened08:16, 02 Jun 2026Rob Rinder is set to revisit a murder case that has stayed with him for decades in a new documentary. The TV star will go back to his roots as a criminal defence barrister to examine the unsolved murder of Liverpool mother-of-three Lucy Hargreaves in Rob Rinder: The Crime I Can't Forget.Lucy, aged 22, was murdered in her home in 2005 in an attack that horrified the nation. She was asleep on the sofa when three men burst inside, shot her and set the property ablaze.A police investigation led to arrests and a subsequent trial, with Rob serving on the defence team.At the conclusion of the prosecution's case, the presiding judge upheld a submission that there was insufficient evidence upon which a jury could properly convict. The defendants were formally acquitted, leaving the murder unsolved to this day, reports the Liverpool Echo."There are some cases that follow you home," Judge Rinder star Rob told Radio Times."Not immediately. At first, they exist only as paperwork, evidence and legal argument. You tell yourself you've done your job professionally. You move on. Another client. Another trial."But every so often, years later, something returns uninvited: a face, a photograph, a fragment of testimony, a mother's voice. For nearly 20 years, that case for me has been the unsolved murder of Lucy Hargreaves."The presenter is now heading back to Liverpool to re-examine the case, meet those who were close to Lucy, and speak with her family, describing it as "one of the most moving experiences of my professional life".The documentary charts the TV star's journey as he revisits pivotal moments in the case, including a reunion with his former lead defence counsel, Rod Johnson KC.Article continues belowHe also sits down with former Metropolitan Police detective Peter Bleksley to examine the case further.A synopsis for the documentary states: "As Rinder confronts the enduring emotional weight of the case, the film asks a careful and considered question: whether developments in the law, including the possibility of a trial in absence, might offer a route to further scrutiny of the evidence."Rob Rinder: The Crime I Can’t Forget is available to watch or stream from Monday, June 8, on Crime + Investigation.
