Bulgaria is marking Botev Day and paying tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom and independence. Commemorative ceremonies, military rituals, and public events are taking place across the country in honor of the revolutionary poet Hristo Botev and the generations of Bulgarians who fought for national liberation.

This year’s observances carry special significance as Bulgaria marks 150 years since the April Uprising and the death of Hristo Botev and his detachment near Okolchitsa Peak. The anniversary has drawn thousands of participants and visitors to events dedicated to one of the most revered figures in Bulgarian history.

The centerpiece of the commemorations remains the traditional national pilgrimage to Mount Okolchitsa, where Botev and his fighters made their final stand. The annual march “On the Path of Botev’s Detachment” also concludes today after retracing the historic route from Kozloduy to Okolchitsa. More than 1,800 participants joined this year’s journey, while organizers reported that over 2,000 people took part in the broader commemorative trek following the route of the revolutionary force.

At noon, the country will once again pause in remembrance. Sirens across Bulgaria will sound for two minutes at exactly 12:00 p.m., honoring those who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom. Citizens are traditionally expected to stop their activities during the signal and pay tribute to the fallen.
