Crystal Palace enter the summer transfer window with a largely settled squad in need of depth after success in the Conference League resulted in qualification for the Europa League next season. The demands of a European campaign told throughout the season. Palace’s Premier League results tailed off from mid-December after a fine start as they lost key players to injury and unavailability. They struggled to cope with three games most weeks and, with four wins in their last 23 league matches, finished 15th.They spent heavily on Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand Larsen in the winter window, bringing the pair in for almost £80million ($107.4m) combined from Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively, while also adding Evann Guessand on loan with an option to buy for a further £28m on top of a £2m loan fee — although that option has since expired. That winter spending will make a difference to their summer business, which is not expected to be extravagant. There is likely to be a slight shift towards younger talent and value, as reported in April. But much of this will be informed by their new manager, the way he is seeking them to play and by any possible departures, with interest likely in key players. The information found within this article has been gathered according to The Athletic’s sourcing guidelines. Sources with knowledge of transfer dealings, who asked to be kept anonymous to protect relationships, have been spoken to before offering the clubs involved the opportunity to comment.Who will make key decisions this window? This is the remit of chairman Steve Parish, sporting director Matt Hobbs with some input from his assistant Ben Stevens. With Oliver Glasner leaving as manager this summer, Palace’s recruitment is slightly more challenging until they have appointed a new manager, but targets have been identified and are being worked on regardless.Palace’s sporting director Matt Hobbs (right) alongside then Wolves chairman Jeff Shi during his time at Molineux (Nathan Stirk/Getty Images)What positions will they be looking at in the summer window?Much of this will depend on whether they sell any of their key players and also on the formation their next manager prefers. But they may add cover at right wing-back for Daniel Munoz. If the Colombian leaves, a first choice will be required.Danny Imray, who turns 23 in July, has impressed on loan in recent seasons, including in the Championship with West Bromwich Albion since January, but may need another loan before he is deemed ready to be a backup in the Premier League.Central midfield needs to be strengthened and add depth.Cheick Doucoure has spent much of the past two and a half years out with injury, while Will Hughes and Jefferson Lerma are both 31 and, although experienced options who can still contribute, more is required in the position to cope with the rigours of another European campaign. Lerma is out of contract but Palace have an option to extend by a further year, which they are likely to take up.The need for another midfielder is more pronounced if Palace are unable to persuade Daichi Kamada, also out of contract this summer, to sign a new deal. And there will be interest in Adam Wharton, although whether clubs actually come in for him is uncertain. Palace will demand a significant sum for their star midfielder, knowing it would be difficult to adequately replace him.If they do not sign Guessand permanently, another attacker will be needed. (Alex Grimm/Getty Images)What is the manager’s priority?Palace do not have one as it stands. While conversations over targets will have been held with candidates, the next manager will not have been heavily involved in recruitment at this stage. Are there any specific players they are targeting?Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney has been someone they have tracked and admired for some time. He is their key midfield target, although they have yet to make a formal offer and other clubs hold an interest. My colleague David Ornstein is reporting this morning that his preference is to join Everton this summer.Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney has interest from a range of Premier League clubs (Julian Finney/Getty Images)Who will they be looking to sell? They will hope to recoup some of the £15m outlay on Matheus Franca, who spent the season on loan at Vasco Da Gama in Brazil. Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, who was close to a permanent departure last summer and ended the season on loan at Stoke City, could also be sold. Much depends on what offers come in from prospective suitors, if there are any.Otherwise, they have a settled squad and do not have any financial need to raise money. While some of their players have long-term aspirations of playing at an even higher level, none are pushing to leave — with the possible exception of Jean-Philippe Mateta. The France striker, whose goal secured the Conference League, is out of contract next summer and has rejected a new deal. Having been hampered by a knee injury, a move to Milan collapsed in January but he has been back to his best since. Palace will consider keeping him alongside Strand Larsen rather than go into the transfer market for another striker with no guarantee of a successful return on their investment. If bids come in for Munoz, Wharton and Maxence Lacroix they will be considered. An integral part of a defence which performed extremely well for much of the season Lacroix is a leader in the team, so Palace would be especially reluctant to sell him. Munoz, although an outstanding and crucial player, is now 30. While there is no active plan to sell, a huge offer might be tempting if an appropriate replacement can be sourced.Eddie Nketiah could leave if there is sufficient interest, with a £27m deal to take him to West Ham United having fallen through in January after he suffered an untimely hamstring injury. But Palace will also be aware of their need for more bodies and his experience will be helpful. Will anyone be earmarked for a loan away?Only those who have been out on loan in previous seasons.Young goalkeepers Joe Whitworth and Owen Goodman will both have suitors for temporary moves, while Palace will want Imray to join a club competing in the top half of the Championship.Hindolo Mustapha played just 46 minutes of senior football all season and will be keen to play a significant amount somewhere next season. Palace require depth, and loaning anyone who is considered to be able to play a part would be naive.Joe Whitworth has spent the last two seasons on loan at Exeter City (Mark Sutton/Getty Images)What moves have they made already? They are yet to make any signings and, although the club’s recruitment is set up in a way that operates without the manager playing too heavy a role, they will need to wait until they are clear on Glasner’s replacement before making too many commitments. There was an option to sign Guessand, who spent the second half of the season on loan from Aston Villa, on a permanent basis. But sources familiar with the situation have told The Athletic that option has since expired and discussions over any possible permanent move would take place in the coming weeks. Sources close to the attacker say they will wait to learn who the new manager is before making a decision.Palace, though, are not certain to pursue a deal. What sort of budget do they have and what is their SCR position?Palace will not be looking to spend heavily without sales after their splurge in January, twice breaking their club record to buy Johnson and then Strand Larsen, but there will be money available to build on the season’s success — while any departures will help. They must meet UEFA’s rule of spending a maximum of 70 per cent revenue for on-pitch spending due to qualifying for the Europa League. The Athletic previously reported that they were close to that limit for the 2025-26 season, but, despite the midseason outlay, they will have been boosted by winning the Conference League and by the sales of Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi in the summer and January respectively.
