A driver is in custody after allegedly speeding across two cities, hitting another motorist's car, and hiding inside a home during a multi-city pursuit.

Senior Sergeant Chris Painter said the incident began when authorities responded to an alert to look out for a speeding vehicle traveling from Auckland.

The vehicle was initially spotted speeding in Manurewa, Auckland, on Monday. The driver quickly fled from officers, and police decided not to pursue at that time.

On Tuesday morning, the vehicle was seen again speeding south on State Highway 1 near Takanini. Police recorded the registration and sent an alert to surrounding policing districts.

The car was next sighted on Clyde Street in Hamilton East around 1pm on Tuesday. Because of the dangerous manner of driving, police observed the vehicle from a distance before attempting to deploy road spikes to stop it.
