The Micronesian nation has passed a new law banning the sale and import of tobacco products every year on 31 May, with fines and prison terms for those caught breaching the legislation.
Nauru enacted an annual May 31 tobacco ban with AU$2000 fines or imprisonment, addressing 35.3% adult smoking prevalence. The initiative targets non-communicable disease prevention, reflecting broader Pacific island health policy shifts on tobacco control.

As per a new law passed by Nauru's parliament earlier last month, 31 May has been declared "Our Day to Let Go of Tobacco", and sellers will face an AU$2000 fine or a 12-month prison stay for violating the law.
A body corporate could face up to $50,000 in fines.
