A witness to the fatal crash in downtown Taupō on Friday evening says what she saw that night will stay with her forever, as police make a fresh appeal for information.

One person died at the scene of the two-vehicle crash on Te Heuheu St that occurred just before 6.30pm. Two others were critically injured, police said.

The street is part of the town’s busy shopping and restaurant district, where there is a low speed zone. The crash was at the Ruapehu St roundabout and was witnessed by a large crowd.

One local woman who saw the crash happen just metres in front of her said one of the vehicles involved passed her at speeds in excess of 100kmh before entering the roundabout and “through anyone who happened to be in the way”.
