Tehran municipality has demolished the circular fountain at Tehran Theater, the latest in a series of removals of historic landmarks that critics say are eroding the city’s identity.
Images published by Payam-e-Ma newspaper show the fountain and surrounding plaza - once used for street performances - have been completely destroyed.
Critics say Mayor Alireza Zakani has demolished historic squares and bridges over recent years under the pretext of development projects and traffic reduction, but the actual goal has been “erasing Tehran’s identity.”
On October 15, the municipality announced Sadeghieh Square would be removed and replaced with a north–south underpass “to organize traffic.”
Similar projects include replacing the Gisha Bridge on Jalal Al-Ahmad Highway with an underpass.
