A migrant construction worker died and 48 others sustained injuries after an iron staircase ramp collapsed at a temporary accommodation in Nandambakkam on Sunday night.The incident took place at a makeshift shed operated by a private firm, where hundreds of workers had gathered to watch the finals of IPL 2026 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, the police said.According to sources, more than 100 workers gathered on a section of the staircase and leaned against the railing while cheering for their respective teams.Unable to withstand the weight, the structure gave way, following which more than 40 workers fell from a height of about 15 feet, landing on top of one another.The injured workers were rushed to Government Kalaignar Centenary Super Specialty Hospital in Guindy, while 22 others were admitted to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre in Porur for treatment.Serious injuriesBrinji Manjhi, 31, from Jharkhand, who suffered serious injuries, died despite treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in the early hours of Monday.The Nandambakkam police have registered a case.They have launched a probe into the incident.
