Three persons, who duped a farmer to the tune of ₹1 lakh under the pretext of getting scholarship for his daughter, have been awarded two months imprisonment.According to police, unidentified persons contacted Lakshmanan, 48, of Panankulam near Nanguneri over the phone and told him that scholarship had been sanctioned for his daughter’s higher studies and asked him to pay ₹1 lakh in instalments for getting the financial assistance. Lured by it, Lakshmanan sent the money to them.After his daughter did not receive any scholarship, Lakshmanan filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Wing on March 17. Upon investigation, the fraudsters were identified as Raju, 25, Rishi, 27, and Rahul, 35, all from Delhi. A special team from Tirunelveli went to Delhi and nabbed the three men,First Judicial Magistrate Sathya awarded two months imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 on them on Monday.Superintendent of Police V. Prassannakumar honoured Cyber Crime Wing Inspector Mahalakshmi and her team, who cracked the online scholarship fraud and ensured the conviction of the fraudsters for the first time in Tirunelveli district in a cyber crime case.
