Deficit rainfall in Tiruppur district so far during this year has placed farmers in a spot of bother.Out of annual rainfall of 698.46 mm, 139.60 mm was recorded till May end, which is lesser by 48.03 mm.The deficit rainfall adversely impacts dryland farming in Palladam, Kunnathur, Mulanur, Dharapuram and Kangayam blocks where dry crops like groundnut and sorghum are raised.According to officials, farmers pin hopes on south-west monsoon season that would last till September.The level at Amaravathy Dam at 8 a.m. on Monday was 32.58 feet against the maximum of 90 feet, with storage of 478.09 mcft against the capacity of 4047 mcft. The inflow was 219 cusecs.Catchment areas of Thirumoorthy Dam received much higher rainfall of 791 cusecs. The dam level was 51.38 feet against the maximum of 69 feet with storage of 1572.43 mcft against the capacity of 1935.25 mcft.The average rainfall over the last 24 hours ending 8 a.m. was 8.66 mm.Moderate rainfall was recorded at the rain gauge stations at Tiruppur South Taluk Office (29 mm), Uthukuli Taluk Office (37 mm), and Palladam Taluk Office (48 mm).Light rainfall was recorded at the rain gauge stations in Tiruppur North Taluk Office (7 mm), Collector Camp Office (6.5 mm), Collector Office (10 mm), Avinashi Taluk Office (13 mm), Kangeyam Taluk Office (11.6 mm), Udumalpet Taluk Office (11 mm).On its part, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has maintained seed stocks: Paddy 35 metric tonnes, millets 15.15 metric tonnes, cereals 22.75 metric tonnes, and oil seeds 39.28 metric tonnes.The district has a stock of 2,680 metric tonnes of urea, 1,351 metric tonnes of DAP, 5,506 metric tonnes of Complex, and 826 metric tonnes of super phosphate, as per official data.
