Your questions about shower heads answeredWhat is the best shower head? The Mira crisp was my best overall shower head, thanks to its excellent spray patterns and well-designed button to change those modes. Budget shoppers should pick up the Triton 8000 duraflow five spray shower head, which punches well above its price tag with five different modes to choose from on an incredibly well-priced head. I also had a bit of a soft spot for the massaging jet on the Hansgrohe raindance select S 120 3 jet ecosmart, although, in fairness, all the shower heads included here are worth investing in. As you can imagine, I took a lot of showers for this article. But I also enlisted my husband and stepdaughter to get different opinions, along with assessing the shower heads on the following criteria. It should be noted that we don’t have the greatest water pressure in our home, so I did make allowances for this.Installation: Shower heads generally just screw on and off to a hose, but I wanted to check that this was an easy procedure, without any difficulties. Flow rate: To determine how much water was used per minute, I conducted a simple test by turning the shower on fully and measuring how much water was collected in a jug in six seconds. I then multiplied this by 10 to measure the litres per minute. Do note that this is a rough estimate, as results will vary depending on your water pressure. Spray distribution: I wanted to make sure that the spray of water covered my body and hair adequately and had enough power to get through my mountains of hair. Design: Although this wasn’t an absolute ‘must have’, I did consider the range of colours and finishes to see what sort of bathrooms the shower head would suit. Ease of cleaning: As I live in an area with incredibly hard water, I looked for features that made it easy to clean the shower head, ensuring that I could easily remove limescale. How to clean a shower headLong advises: “Take a big pan of boiling water and add scale remover before popping the shower head in to soak. Most shower heads have rub-clean bristles on the end and if a shower pump burns out it’s because of scale build up in the rubber bristles. You need to scrub them clean with a little scrubbing brush to remove limescale and debris.”Are shower heads universal?“Usually most shower heads in the UK are 15mm (or half inch) so are pretty universal,” says Long. “The connection is always universal but be aware that there is not a universal fit for the shower holder.” How to replace a shower headUnscrew anti clockwise and make sure there’s a rubber washer between the shower hose and shower head to stop water leaking,” says Long. “You should always be looking to let it thread on naturally – if it doesn’t feel right screwing it on then take off and start again. Keep it hand tight; there’s no need to use pliers or similar.”Meet the experts Kieron Long: Owner of 1st Aylesbury Plumbing & Heating LtdWhy you can trust IndyBest reviewsJo Plumridge is an expert product tester with more than 20 years of experience writing for a variety of magazines, websites and books.
