Construction of a new temple chariot for the annual Panguni Uthiram festival at the Perur Patteeswarar Temple commenced on Sunday.Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar inaugurated the work for the 65-foot-tall chariot on the temple premises. The temple conducts its annual Panguni Uthiram festival with five chariots carrying the idols of Somaskandar, Pachainayaki Amman, Subramaniyar, Vinayagar and Natarajar. As the existing wooden chariots have deteriorated over time, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department had planned to construct new chariots.As a first phase, approval was granted for the construction of a new chariot for Lord Patteeswarar at an estimated cost of ₹1.41 crore. The project was inaugurated through video conferencing on November 27 last year by the then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. However, the work did not progress subsequently.Following the change in government, the project has now been taken up.Officials said the construction would be completed in time for the next Panguni Uthiram festival, when the procession is expected to be held using the new chariot.Siravai Adheenam Kumaragurubara Swamigal, HR&CE Joint Commissioner Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner Vimala and Marudamalai Subramaniyaswamy Temple trustee Jayakumar were present.
