The United States has approved a major expansion of Bulgaria’s F-16 Block 70 fighter program, authorizing the sale of additional advanced air-to-air missiles, support equipment, and related services. The decision was announced through a notice published in the US Federal Register and submitted to Congress.

Under the newly approved package, Bulgaria will acquire 125 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, NATO’s latest beyond-visual-range air combat weapon, along with four AIM-9X Block II missiles designed for close-range aerial engagements. The agreement also includes five additional AIM-120C-8 guidance sections, spare parts, technical assistance, maintenance, and logistical support.

The expansion adds an estimated USD957 million to the existing F-16 program, raising the total value of Bulgaria’s aircraft, weapons, and support package to approximately USD2.63 billion. Of the newly approved amount, about USD452 million is allocated to major defense equipment. Following the update, the overall value of core defense equipment within the program reaches roughly USD1.43 billion.

According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the additional missiles will substantially strengthen the operational capabilities of Bulgaria’s future F-16 Block 70 fleet. American officials say the weapons package is expected to improve the country’s readiness to carry out air policing missions, safeguard national airspace, contribute to deterrence efforts, and participate in joint NATO operations.
