Metservice is warning parts of the North Island could see intense, highly localised downpours in the early hours of Tuesday.
More than 20 severe weather warnings and watches are in place for the West Coast and top of the South Island and for much of the upper North Island.
Meterologist Michael Pawley said an intense band of rain was moving across the country, with the heaviest rainfall expected to continue overnight.
