Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to lash parts of both the north and South Island as a front hits Aotearoa.

MetService said a trough embedded in a humid northerly flow is bringing heavy rain to northern and western parts of the South Island, spreading into the North Island on Monday.

It said it is likely to “be a significant weather event affecting large parts of the country.”

There are currently 15 severe weather warnings and watches issued for Aotearoa, with most kicking in on Monday.

Northland is expected to have heavy falls and thunderstorms on Monday morning before the heavy rain warning kicks in at 12pm, bringing up to 200mm of rain in localised places.
