Guillermo Ochoa is poised to make history one of only three players to participate in six World Cups, after the 40-year-old goalkeeper was named in Javier Aguirre's Mexico squad for the upcoming tournament. Ochoa, who first featured in Germany in 2006, has seen limited national team appearances recently but has been included to provide crucial experience within the 26-man selection. The stopper, who is currently without a club after his contract at AEL Limassol expired, put in a star-making campaign at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, producing two man-of-the-match performances on their way to the last 16.His display against the host nation in the group stage was particularly memorable, with his superb stop to deny a powerful Neymar header - compared to Gordon Banks’ iconic save against Pele at the 1970 World Cup - helping secure Mexico a 0-0 draw in Fortaleza.Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa will make history at this summer’s World Cup (Getty)He will join Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo in going to his sixth World Cup, with the feat having never previously been achieved before this summer. The squad, curated by Aguirre, strikes a balance between seasoned professionals and burgeoning talent. Alongside Ochoa, captain Edson Alvarez and striker Raul Jimenez bring significant World Cup pedigree. Conversely, the roster introduces promising young players such as Guadalajara forward Armando Gonzalez and 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora, who is set to become Mexico's youngest ever World Cup participant.Further diversifying the team are US-developed dual nationals Obed Vargas and Brian Gutierrez, alongside naturalised players Alvaro Fidalgo, a Spain-born midfielder, and Colombia-born forward Julian Quinones, both now regulars in the national setup. Mexico, who last reached the quarter-finals when hosting in 1986, will co-host this year's tournament with the United States and Canada.Aguirre will lead the national side for a third time, having previously managed them in 2002 and 2010. The team will play a final warm-up match against Serbia on Thursday before commencing their World Cup campaign against South Africa at Estadio Azteca on 11 June.
