Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said Monday that while his Socialist PASOK party is plotting its own course towards the next national elections it should be prepared for potential talks on post-electoral cooperation with parties further to the left, should the need arise.
Opinion polls show the governing conservative New Democracy is most likely to win the next election, set for spring 2027, getting twice as many votes as the second party but without the required majority to govern alone.
This could result in the runner-up – either PASOK or, likelier, left-wing former prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ new ELAS party – being handed the mandate to try and form a government.
In a social media post Monday, Doukas said that should ND find itself unable to govern PASOK and ELAS ought to be in a position to discuss cooperation.
“In order to cooperate – even in government – we must have started discussing from now what our positions and programs are, where we agree, where we disagree,” he said.
