There have been 20 police killings for the year thus far, with 14 of the killings occurring during the ongoing state of emergency (SoE) which came into effect on March 3.Included among those killed are a number of home invasion suspects. Families of four of the dead men have since questioned police use of force and called for thorough investigations into their deaths.Last Friday, Police Complaints Authority (PCA) head David West confirmed to the Express that, at that time, 13 had been killed in ten police-involved shooting incidents during the SoE.On Saturday, that figure rose by one, after a 20-year-old man was shot and killed by police after allegedly pointing an object resembling a firearm at an officer at his Matura home.Following is every police-involved shooting recorded between March 3 and May 30:March 4David ‘Sours’ Boodoo was shot and killed by police at his Sangre Grande home.Boodoo, who was on bail for the 2023 murder of Donald Javel Pierre, died during an exchange with police as they entered his premises.Police said officers from a specialised unit had entered the home that afternoon when they allegedly came under gunfire, prompting them to return fire. However, Boodoo’s family has challenged the police account, claiming that he was unarmed and that he had been shot multiple times “in cold blood” on the floor of his bathroom.March 16Sharaz Samaroo was shot and killed by police following a home invasion in Valsayn, hours after he and three others allegedly attempted to rob a Valsayn home. Police reported that Samaroo was one of four, including a 14-year-old boy who allegedly broke into the Valsayn Avenue home shortly after midday.One of the home’s occupants saw three men and the boy jump over a wall and walk into the house. She told police she was slapped and that another occupant began to scream. Police said the men ran out of the home after a relative ran towards the suspects.After police were contacted, the North-Central Division Task Force responded, searching the area and capturing two suspects.Officers from its Home Invasion Team also responded, police said, and spotted one of the men in bushes off Farm Road, St Joseph. The man, later identified as Samaroo, allegedly opened fire on the officers, who reciprocated.April 12Shakeel Smart died after being shot by police in Cascade.According to police, officers were on patrol that night along the Cascade Main Road when a white Nissan AD Wagon with three men inside had been observed speeding off. Officers chased the vehicle to Hololo Mountain Road, during which they claimed the suspects opened fire. Officers returned fire and the vehicle eventually veered off the street following which three men exited the vehicle - two fleeing and the third collapsing. He was identified as Smart and taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he died.April 17Twenty-nine-old Romario Borneo was fatally shot by police in St Mary’s Village. His family has since challenged the official police account of his death, calling for a thorough investigation into the event.According to police, officers from the Marabella Police Station were acting on information about a robbery suspect at a wooden structure in Moruga Road. As they arrived at the location, police reported that they met Borneo allegedly armed with a shotgun. Officers said they instructed him to drop the weapon but he failed to comply, resulting in them discharging their weapons. He was struck and pronounced dean when taken to hospital.Borneo’s relatives have since claimed that he had been intoxicated and asleep when he was shot by police. They also claimed six bullet holes were found in the room, near the head of his bed.April 26Shivnath Jogie, 24, was shot during a confrontation with police at his Corinth home, near San Fernando.Jogie, a labourer, encountered police after an alleged physical altercation between him and another man in his yard. Police said they were at his home to investigate the altercation as the other man had been chopped with a cutlass in Jogie’s yard.However, his relatives have questioned the police use of force and defended Jogie, saying the injured man came into Jogie’s yard with a cutlass, which he wrestled away from the man and chopped him before contacting an ambulance and police.April 30Jaden Pierre, 26, was shot and killed by police in Tunapuna. The fatal incident occurred during a Controlled Payment Operation (CPO) conducted by officers of the Anti-Extortion Unit, supported by the Home Invasion Team.Police said the operation had stemmed from a report made by a business owner who claimed he had been coerced into paying $1,800 over three weeks to a man who made demands via a telephone. The suspect had reportedly demanded a monthly payment of $3,000.Police arranged an operation at the location and the suspect arrived to collect the cash in a white envelope.As he left, he was approached by two officers who identified themselves to him, police said.Police said the suspect allegedly produced a firearm and pointed it in their direction, causing them to discharge their service weapons. Pierre was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he was pronounced dead.May 2Four alleged home invaders were killed by police following an early morning robbery in Cunupia.Police said that around 3.30 a.m. they received reports that a 70-year-old farmer was confronted by a group of masked men, armed with a gun in his bedroom. The men allegedly tied the farmer up before taking cash and a cellphone.Police said intelligence led to the suspects being intercepted near a supermarket along Ramnarine Trace, off Esmeralda Road. At that point an exchange of gunfire ensued during the interception. Three of the suspects were fatally shot at the scene and pronounced dead at hospital, while two others were arrested. Later in the day, a fourth was found dead on Ramnarine Street.May 6Police claimed to have disrupted another home invasion gang following an incident that left one suspect dead.Officers of the Southern Division Task Force said they confronted a group of men in Marabella based on “credible intelligence” that a group of men armed with illegal firearms were preparing to launch a home invasion on Union Park East.Responding officers met eight men gathered in a yard, who attempted to flee when they saw the officers. Police said two suspects pointed firearms at officers resulting in an armed confrontation. During this exchange, one of the men was fatally shot, police said.May 20Abdullah Joseph, 35, was fatally shot by policeA statement from TTPS said Joseph was shot after he was found on the Cunupia premises of a family who was out of the country, and pointed a firearm at officers when confronted.The officers said fearing for their lives, they discharged their firearms in the direction of the threat.After being shot Joseph was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility, where he died.Joseph’s relatives admitted he was a “petty thief” but stated he did not carry a weapon.May 21An unidentified man was shot dead by police while responding to a report of a home invasion in Chaguanas.The man allegedly drew a firearm and pointed it in the direction of the officers, who in turn shot at him.May 29In the most recent incident, Jaden Diaz, 20, of Lower Rio Grande, Matura was shot and killed by police on Friday.
