The Indian Railways has renewed its push for Atmospheric Water Generators in regions where availability of piped clean drinking water is a challenge. These systems can produce potable water from moisture present in the air. In a letter to zones, production units, and its public sector undertakings, the Railway Board said these generators can be installed at places facing water shortage. Railway stations, hospitals, staff colonies, offices, level crossings and other service areas where regular supply of drinking water is needed were listed among potential locations in the letter issued last month.“Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) provide an innovative and environment-friendly solution by generating potable water directly from moisture present in the air. These systems can reduce dependence on conventional water sources and support sustainable water management,” the board said while underscoring the availability of clean drinking water remains a challenge in many locations. The Board's letter follows multiple heatwave advisories issued last month which recommended citizens to remain hydrated. On Sunday the India Meteorological Department noted that heat wave conditions have “been abated from the country.” But the government weather forecasting agency predicted "heat wave condition likely to prevail over Bihar during June 4th – 6th.”AWGs were first introduced on the national transporter in December 2019 at the Secunderabad Railway station. Later in August 2022, six railway stations in the Mumbai Division of Central Railways got the AWGs.Officials said domestic firms have experience in indigenising this technology. The final number of units needed after the directive has not been fixed and will depend on the demand raised by implementation entities. In May 2023, the Railway Board said AWGs can be installed considering technicality and cost comparison with other solutions available for providing potable water. These are to be funded from the budget for “environment related works” which also includes water conservation, solar energy plants, and measures for natural air conditioning, among others.Since May 2016, the board has been allocating 1% cost in all sanctioned Works (infrastructure creation) under environment related works through a dedicated policy for the same.
Railways renews push for installing Atmospheric Water Generators
Indian Railways has renewed its push to deploy Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) in water-scarce areas, asking zones, production units and PSUs to identify locations where clean drinking water supply remains a challenge. AWGs generate potable water from moisture in the air and can be installed at railway stations, hospitals, staff colonies, offices, level crossings and other service areas.
