The union at Kakao, operator of Korea's dominant messaging app KakaoTalk, announced Monday it will stage a four-hour partial strike on June 10, along with a rally at the company's headquarters in Pangyo, Gyeonggi.

"The core demand is to halt asset sales, spinoffs and restructuring stemming from repeated management failures and to secure job stability," the Kakao branch of the Korean Chemical Textile Food Workers' Union said in a statement explaining its reason for the strike. "Management must reform a compensation system that allows executives to monopolize outsize rewards even after causing job insecurity through poor decision-making.”

The union acknowledged public concern about potential disruptions to KakaoTalk and other widely used services, and said it had deliberately chosen a limited action for now. "We are aware that many people are worried about disruptions to KakaoTalk and other services that are deeply embedded in daily life," it said. "Rather than an immediate all-out strike, we are proceeding with a four-hour partial strike, and we plan to escalate depending on how negotiations develop."
