A proponent for AI data centre development says there are considerable benefits for regional economic development, with work already underway in a number of centres.

Kākāriki Renewables executive director Simon Currie said New Zealand could become an AI data centre hub, which would attract the investment needed to improve critical infrastructure, including renewable energy, transmission and water services.

He said advanced data centres were a good fit for New Zealand, which had an economy founded on industrial development for export.
