The Ekiti State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating female genital mutilation and other forms of gender-based violence in the state.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, described FGM as a harmful practice with no health benefits, questioning why mothers still subject their daughters to the practice despite its consequences.
Filani, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, spoke in Ado Ekiti on Saturday during a two-day training for health educators and assistant health educators in the state.
The training was organised by the United Nations Population Fund in collaboration with the Ekiti State Ministry of Health to strengthen advocacy for the abandonment of the practice.
