The former governor, who resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2025 before joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026, maintained that he had never deliberately taken public funds.
However, when pressed on issues of transparency and corruption, Amaechi responded with a statement that has since attracted attention.
